Drug Addiction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Drug Addiction - Essay Example They crave for the drug so much that they can do anything they could to get a dose for them to relax. For those who are addicted they will continue taking the drugs even after realizing the harm it has on their body. (Amusable, 2008) The risk factors of drug addiction are common as for the other condition. Risk factors include family history of addiction where it is usually common on the families that had prior addiction before the current case. In addition, addiction of drug is dominant in males than female according to statistics. Stats show that the addiction in male is two folds compared with their counterparts. Peer pressure is also a contributing factor. This according to stats is seen mostly in the young people trying to fit in their social stratum. After the first introduction into drug abuse, the body develops a tolerance with time and eventually dependence. Drug addiction is a physiological process on its own. It is a physiologic process, because, it does not just happen at once but develops slowly and in sequential stages. Dopamine is the main hormone that is involved physiologically in the process of drug addiction. Drugs such as cocaine, morphine, and alcohol alter the pathway of dopamine. The first dose taken by an individual has no big effect. Additional drug abuse cause tolerance effect and soon the level of dopamine increase and consequently cause a feeling of being happy. Continuous administration of drugs also has a sensitization effect on the extracellular cells. So when an individual has reduced, or the dose reduce in the blood also the happiness causing hormone, dopamine, also goes down and the craving also start to go back to normal. The drugs taken tend to increase dopamine and when withdrawn the level of this dopamine dwindle and the cycle repeat itself. This cycle is what is known as drug addiction (Hanson, 2005). Will power to withdraw from drugs is most a time futile. The physiologic development of regulation effect

Strategic Operations Issues Essay Example for Free
Strategic Operations Issues Essay Using your own organisation or a local organisation that you know well, identify a strategic operations issue or problem that needs to be addressed. Describe the organisation briefly and briefly explain the specific operational issue, problem or process that needs to be addressed and provide clear details of its functions within the organisation; analyse the problem using a concept covered in the subject; consider the performance objectives of operations management; changes to performance objectives or outcomes; improvements; theory and recommendations for improving the system or operation. Executive summary Manufacturing plant operation issues of XYZ Plastics Pty Ltd This paper studies the operations issues of XYZ Plastics Pty Ltdââ¬â¢s manufacturing plant. In the last three months, the plant experienced a decline in % OEE (% Overall Equipment Effectiveness) from 90 per cent to 81 per cent, the raw materials inventory increased 10 per cent from 900 tons to 990 tons and increased the outsource warehouse cost from $100 000 per month to $150 000 per month. The overtime cost was also increased by 50 per cent from $20 000 per month to $30 000 per month. The analysis of the manufacturing process and workflow revealed that the root causes were: a) Inadequate communication linkage between the Planner and Maintenance supervisor which resulted in lack of critical spare parts to service major equipment breakdown. b) The batch size of white product was too small which contributed to speed loss and quality loss c) The Plannerââ¬â¢s order quantity of raw materials was too big and caused average inventory to increase and inventory overflow to outsource warehouse. d) The double handling of raw materials by the warehouse staff which contributed to the wastage of overtime resources. The study recommended the company: a) Use a Kanban system to signal ââ¬Å"pullâ⬠to the Planner to order spare parts for maintenance department. b) To set up an operating policy to limit the minimum production batch size to ÃÆ'24 tons for white product. c) To maintain a discipline of using the Economic Order Quality (EOQ) for replenishmentà order of the raw materials and reorder according to the inventory profile based on safety stock, delivery time and consumption rate. d) To provide training to the operating staff regarding the Wastes of Lean Manufacturing as a way to promote the learning culture. Table of Contents Table of Figures 1 Introduction XYZ Plastics Pty Ltd manufactures and sells black and white plastic materials for toy molding application. Its manufacturing process involves grinding the polyethylene plastics into a molten form and mixing with black pigment or white pigment. It produces a black product and a white product. The products are sold in 25 kg bags. The plant operates 24 hours by seven days a week but only four weeks in a month. It produces a product mix of 96 per cent black and four per cent white. The General Manager reviewed the monthly operations report recently and found that in the last three months, the operations performance was on a downward trend: a) Its Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) dropped down from 90 per cent to 81 per cent. Pophaley (2010) states that there would have been issues associated with the Availability rate, Performance rate or Quality rate. b) Raw material average inventory was increased by 10 per cent and the outsourced warehouse costs increased by 15 per cent. c) There was 50 per cent more overtime paid to fulltime workers. The sales volume remained unchanged at around 672 000 kg per month in the last three months. This was alarming because it suggested that the profile and productivity would have dropped. The General Manager called a meeting with its operations team to review the performance data and operations issues. They traced the problem back to the manufacturing processes and workflow to determine the root causes and take corrective actions. Discussion and analysis The manufacturing process involves loading the plastic pellets and pigments into the hopper, the grinder and mixer converts the mechanical energy into heat then melts and mixes the raw materials. The mixed molten paste is extruded out through a pressing die with 400 holes to form spaghetti like strips. The strips are cooled by water and cut into pellets by the rotary cutter, the slurry is then spun in a water separator to remove the water and dry the plastic pellets (see Figure 1 below). The products are then packed into 25 kg bags and stacked onto a pallet as a 1000 kg lot. Figure Manufacturing process schematic diagram 2.1 OEE performance trend analysis The operations team reviewed the % OEE trend of the last three months and looked at the date of three components that made up the % OEE, namely Availability rate, Performance rate and Quality rate mentioned by (Pophaley 2010). They found that all three components were on the decreasing trend which contributed to the % OEE decrease from 90 per cent to 81 per cent. The operations team found that the Availability rate dropped from 95 per cent to 93 per cent which indicated that there was increase of equipment breakdowns. They looked at the maintenance log book and found that there was an increase of pressing die cleaning frequency. During the pressing die cleaning, the process is shut down and the maintenance staffs needs to spend 16 hours to drill holes to clean the dirt out. This maintenance job is usually outsourced and they have a spare pressing die but this was not returned to the plant on time from the cleaning services supplier because there was a miscommunication between the Pla nner and the Maintenance Supervisor. The workflow is described in (Figure 2 below). Figure Process mapping of workflow The maintenance supervisor left an email message to the Planner, to order the die cleaning service which the Planner overlooked. There was a delay in sending the spare pressing die out to the supplier for cleaning. If they hadà the spare pressing die ready, they would have saved the downtime of 16 hours for cleaning the die. It appears that a Kanban pull system would have provided better systematic demand information as stated by (Claudio Krishnamurthy 2009) for parts replenishment. The operations team found that the performance rate dropped from 97 per cent to 92 per cent of their maximum capable production rate of 1030 kg per hour, based on the current deteriorated production rate of 947.6 kg per hour (0.92 Ãâ" 1030) the plant will be behind the monthly production target. The operations team reviewed the production log book and found that the production speed loss was due to increased production runs of white products. For every white production run, the operating staffs needs to clean the whole production line thoroughly because the black pellets in the previous run will contaminate the white products. The cleaning process required two hours per run. The plant also needs to spend two hours to change the rotary cutter as well. The plant normally runs one white product per month (26 880 kg) but in recent months the sales team requested four smaller white product runs per month (6720 kg Ãâ" 4). The rationale was there were four smaller customers willing to pay higher price for the white products but they required delivery at short notice without providing forecast to the Planner. The smaller run size of white product contributes negatively to the per cent performance rate, the cleaning time of two hours per run and cutter changing time of two hours per run contributes a total of four hours of speed loss per run which could have been utilised to make more products. The Planner and sales team did not communicate with each other on this change and assess the economy of scale for the production run. The operations team re-assessed the change with the capacity size decision process, as (Rabta Reiner 2012) suggested that optimal values of production batch size will reduce cost and lead time. The operations team took considerations on algorithms of the extra cost required for the cleaning, changing cutter and speed loss for different batch sizes, and generated a graph (see Figure 3 below) to assist the decision on the size of the production run. Figure Capacity size decision graph The Figure 3 graph showed that the smaller run (6720 kg per run) costs more to make per ton and even selling at increased price, it was making a profile margin of only $100 per ton. In comparison, the larger run size (26 880 kg per run) costs less to make but even selling at normal price, it was still making $400 per ton. The graph showed that the most economical run of the white product is ÃÆ'24 tons. The operations team also found that the quality rate dropped from 98 per cent to 95 per cent. They checked the quality records and determined that this was due to the rework materials generated from the increased white runs. The manufacturing team used raw materials to purge clean the process system to avoid contamination. The purged materials were used later on the black runs as rework. The time they spent on the rework could have been utilised to make good product. The above analysis determined the root causes which caused the % OEE drop from 90 per cent to 81 per cent and it is illustrated below: % OEE = Availability rate % Ãâ" Performance rate % Ãâ" Quality rate % Historical % OEE = 95% Ãâ" 97% Ãâ" 98% = 90% Current % OEE = 93% Ãâ" 92% Ãâ" 95% = 81%. 2.2 Raw materials inventory analysis The operations team reviewed the inventory performance on the monthly operations report; it showed that the raw material average inventory volume increased by 10 per cent from 900 tons to 990 tons in the last three months. Due to the increase in average inventory, the plant ran out of storage space and therefore it required the inventory to be stored at an outsourced warehouse location. The plant storage space was enough to store 1000 tons of raw materials but from time to time the space is filled and overflows the inventory to the outsource warehouse especially in the last three months. As a result, it increased the storage costs by 15 per cent from $100 000 to $115 000 per month including logistics and labour costs for the material handling. The operations team interviewed the Planner regarding the order quality and order frequency. The investigation revealed that the Planner was notà ordering based on inventory management principles. The ordering process takes about one week, from placing the order to receiving the goods. The plant normally keeps a safety stock of 672 tons of raw materials (roughly enough for one month consumption). This was based on their experience that the raw materials comes from other state and shipment delays could be up to four weeks; this safety stock is to maintain the service levels of the company. The raw material comes in normal order quantity of 2.5 weeks consumption, about 420 tons (672 Ãâ" 2.5/4 = 420 tons). The Planner starts to place order when the inventory gets close to 672 tons (the safety stock mark). When there is a supplier promotion, the Planner would order a bigger quantity than 420 tons, thinking that would save the company money. There were a number of supplier promotions in the last three months and the Planner placed a bigger order quantity of 470 tons for each promotion which resulted in an increase in average inventory level from 900 tons to 990 tons. The operations team constructed a graph to determine if the Planner was making the correct order quantity decision. They used the total inventory cost based on two inventory cost components mentioned by (Schreibfeder 2009), namely holding cost and materials order cost. Figure Economic order quality(EOQ) The EOQ graph in Figure 4 indicated that the order quantity of 470 tons which the Planner placed on the supplierââ¬â¢s promotion was not economical. Rather than saving the company money, the total cost was higher than that of the EOQ of 336 tons. Even the normal order quantity of 420 tons was not as economical as the EOQ of 336 tons. The inventory profile with the new EOQ of 336 tons is shown in (Figure 5 below). It was constructed according to the method shown by (Silver Zufferey 2011) with the probabilistic replenishment lead time and slope (consumption rate). If The EOQ of 336 tons was adopted and orders were placed when the inventory touches 840 tons, it would have kept an average inventory of 840 tons and maximum of about 1000 tons on site. The inventory profile showed that average inventory (840 tons) would be lower than the current average inventory (990 tons) and most importantly it would eliminate the need for outsource warehouse. Figure Raw material inventory profile 2.3 Labour cost analysis The operations team reviewed the profit and loss statement and found out that there were 50 per cent more overtime paid to fulltime workers. It increased from $20 000 to $30 000 per month in the last three months. The amount of overtime was mainly paid to the warehouse staff. The operations team interviewed the warehouse supervisor and found that when the raw materials warehouse is full, they would move the materials to the finished goods warehouse for temporary storage, and shift it back when there are more spaces. One round trip to transport one ton of materials on a fork lift would require two minutes. These are considered double handling of materials as stated by (Liker Franz 2011). This is one of the Wastes in Lean manufacturing namely (transportation) that should be avoided (Slack, Brandon-Jones, Johnston, R Betts, A 2012). Conclusion The drop in Availability rate was due to the longer breakdown time required to clean the pressing die as there was no spare pressing die available. It appears that both the Planner and Maintenance supervisor required an improved communication system for the spare parts ordering. The capacity size decision graph in Figure 3 showed that the most economical run of the white products is 24 tons. Any smaller run size would result in speed loss and contribute negatively to the performance rate. The quality records showed that the drop in quality rate was due to the rework materials generated from the increased white runs per month. These root causes need to be addressed in order to improve the % OEE from the current level of 81 per cent back to 90 per cent. The EOQ graph in Figure 4 indicated that the order quantity of 470 tons which the Planner placed on the supplierââ¬â¢s promotion was not economical; even the normal order quantity of 420 tons was not economical. The associated total costs were both higher than that of the EOQ of 336 tons; it increased the average raw materials inventory level on site and causes inventory overflow to the outsource warehouse. There were double handling of materials by theà warehouse staff and this is a ââ¬Å"transportation wasteâ⬠which needs to be avoided according to the lean manufacturing principals described by (Liker Franz 2011). 4 Recommendations The maintenance supervisor should use a Kanban system to signal a ââ¬Å"pullâ⬠to the Planner to order outsource services to clean the pressing die. Kanban is a visual signal system advocated by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota and mentioned by (Liker Franz 2011). The Maintenance supervisor can use a red box to signal that the pressing die is ready to be picked up and send outside for cleaning. When the cleaned pressing die returns, it can be placed in a green box indicating it is ready to be used, similar to the dual card system described by (Chen Subramaniamac 2012). The plant needs to set up an operating policy which states that the minimum size is to be 24 tons for white product. The Planner needs to maintain a discipline of using the EOQ of 336 tons for replenishment order of the raw materials and placing the purchasing order when the raw materials inventory touches 840 tons (a re-order point about one week before it reaches the safety stock of 672 tons). The inventory profile should be reviewed every three months to update the consumption rate to determine the new re-order point. The plant needs to provide training to operating staff regarding the Wastes of Manufacturing especially the warehouse staff as a way to promote the learning culture as advocated in Toyota and stated by (Liker Franz 2011). The operations performance such as OEE should be shared with all staff and initiate counter measures to poor performances. This will connect the staff to the continuous improvement cycle to achieve operational excellence.

Philosophy :: essays research papers
My Philosophy 02150 I often sit and wonder is there a greater being that created all that is around us? I always find myself with the same conclusion there must be. Everyone was created for a purpose even if that is to be a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen, that might make a difference in their life. Everyone has their place and who they are in the world. Everyone should have the freedom to not be judged and the freedom to express their individuality. Love should be expressed more between people, a simple smile is a sign of love for another. Love can't be defined but only felt. Be grateful for the gifts God has given you, you don't understand what they meant to you until they are gone. Relationships with others good and bad; build character. Don't worry about the small things as much focus on the larger and the future. We feel emotion it is a great gift given to us, emotion are the basis of life, all our thoughts are surrounded by emotion. Emotions can't be defined they are to complex to understand and try to explain; a child could say they are sad when a parent dies while another child could say they are sad when a parent hits them; is this the same emotion? the eyes are a window to the soul. They give us a sense of emotion that is being felt, looking deep Into someone's eyes can create many complex feelings. Communication is the most important aspect within a relationship it help to express feelings, thoughts, dreams and it takes a good listeners to carry a conversation. The best thing you can do for someone is love them. Nature cleanses the soul a cool rain or just string at the stars on a clear night can do wonders for the soul. If it's to be it's up to me. Life is full of excitement it's a matter of waking up to discover it. It's a good quality to be a dreamer and always imagine what or how things could be different. A bigger problem then world hunger or war is how we treat each others not everyone is treated equal or with respect. This is what we have to start worrying about before the larger issues. Life's stories and experiences make us who we are.

Title IX Essay -- Physical Education
In recent years, there has been a passionate debate that has gained considerable attention between same-sex physical education classes and coeducational physical education classes. Coeducation physical education classes were executed in an attempt to meet and sustain the requirements of Title IX. Title IX, Education Amendments of 1972, prohibits discrimination, exclusion of participating in, or receiving benefits of any academic program or activity, based on sex, in an educational institution receiving federal financial funds. Title IX provides integration of males and females in physical education classes; however, unfortunately, it does not guarantee equal treatment. Derry and Phillips (2004) stated in their study entitled, ââ¬Å"Comparisons of Selected Student and Teacher Variables in All-Girl and Coeducational Physical Education Environmentsâ⬠that ââ¬Å"physical education is the learning environment provided for youth in the United States to become successful in motor movement, skills, and game playâ⬠. Recent research has leading evidence to support that during coeducational academic classes and physical education classes, girls receive significantly less amounts of attention, feedback, participation opportunities and support and encouragement. Physical education classes should offer development of high levels of competence and self-esteem through a variety of physical activities, games and sports. However, research implies that coeducational physical education classes may not provide the optimal environment needed for learning certain specific skills. Furthermore, research also suggests that this environment in coeducational p hysical education classesââ¬â¢ changes due to oneââ¬â¢s perception based on different developmental periods in t... ...gs. Corporate Social Responsiblity and Wal-Mart
Corporate Social Responsibility and Wal-Mart Corporations deal with a wide variety of social issues and problems; some directly related to their operations, some are not. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be defined as ââ¬Å"the actions of an organization that are targeted toward achieving a social benefit over and above maximizing profits for its shareholders and meeting all its legal obligationsâ⬠(Ghillyer 78). If this is the case, establishing appropriate and practical ethical guidelines in the workplace seems to be a reasonable request as a basis for corporate operations. Wal-Mart should be an example in determining what constitutes the values associated with its fundamental purpose of Corporate Social Responsibility. The four components of CSR are financial, legal, ethical, and philanthropic (Barnett). These areas of CSR ought to exist within every companyââ¬â¢s infrastructure; however, the organizationââ¬â¢s primary focus is usually on performance and profit not on social conscientiousness. Financial being the first component of CSR is often the major factor in a companyââ¬â¢s consideration of ethical standards. The main goal of any business is to keep its costs low and to earn a profit. Financial responsibilities in regards to CSR means that society expects that a corporation will produce needed goods and services that are desired by customers and sell those goods and services at a reasonable price while still earning a profit. The organization strives to be efficient and profitable along with keeping the best interest of the shareholders in mind (Barnett). Financially, the Wal-Mart Corporation is a multi-billion dollar industry with close to two million employees worldwide. On the positive side, Wal-Martââ¬â¢s motto is ââ¬Å"Always low prices. Always! They uphold this motto by providing low prices to consumers with a high return on investment to satisfy stockholders. On the negative side, with jobs currently being scarce, Wal-Mart seems to manage keeping costs low by demanding high productivity from their associates (employees) with seemingly low compensation. In addition, most associates cannot afford to be covered by health insurance. The consequence of this treatment of personnel is a high employee turnover rate, which seems to question managementââ¬â¢s view that the organization is a family (ââ¬Å"The NEW Age of Walmartâ⬠). The second component of CSR, which is representative of the legal standards and obligations, refers to the expectation that a corporation will follow the rules set down by society. This means the organization is to comply with government laws used to protect employeesââ¬â¢, stakeholders, customers, suppliers, the community, and other competition in the marketplace. An individual business could have thousands of legal responsibilities governing almost every aspect of their operations, including consumer and product laws, environmental laws, and employment laws (Barnett). The legal challenges that face Wal-Mart are numerous. Before Wal-Mart decides to build a new store, it researches and visits specific site locations in conjunction with considering the neighborhood. It does so discretely as not attract attention attempting to protect against opposition to the development of a new store. Defenders of Wal-Mart propose the overall advantages to the community, which includes economic benefits and consumer choice. Opponents to a new Wal-Mart have concerns over traffic congestion, public safety, and competition to small business. Often there can be protests from labor unions, environmental groups, and other wary citizens (ââ¬Å"The NEW Age of Walmartâ⬠). Ethics is the third component of Corporate Social Responsibility. The ethical responsibilities concern societal expectations that go beyond the law, such as the expectation that organizations will conduct their affairs in a fair and just way. This means that organization are expected to do more than just comply with the law, they are to do what is considered right by societyââ¬â¢s standards. Organizations should make proactive efforts to anticipate and meet the norms of society even if the law does not formally enact those norms. Ethics are a necessary and critical ingredient in any business that wants to be successful (Barnett). Wal-Mart seems to address the fact that there should be a code of ethics. The application of corporate ethical behavior needs to be dealt with on a personal and professional level. The key for Wal-Mart is to help their associates indentify if their actions are right or wrong. They rely on a system of training and business practices started by its founder, Sam Walton (ââ¬Å"The NEW Age of Walmartâ⬠). Lastly, one of the most overlooked areas of CSR is the fourth component of philanthropic and discretionary responsibilities. In other words, this means society expects that corporations be good citizens that they will show concern for humanity. It may involve such things as performing charitable actions, supporting programs that benefit a community or nation, and donating expertise time and/or services to worthy causes (Barnett). In this area, the future of Wal-Mart looks promising if it is willing to recognize their duty to society. With its tremendous size, the organization is faced with being an example to other corporations. It is trying to make efforts such as supporting the environment, but they have just begun to scrap the surface. It will require balance between profit and social responsibility (ââ¬Å"The NEW Age of Walmartâ⬠). Works Cited Barnett, Tim. ââ¬Å"Corporate Social Responsibility. â⬠2010. Magnatune essays
Magnatune essays Record producer is a loosely defined term that (in my opinion) could reach from As to managers and essentially means any person responsible for completing a master recording so that it is fit for release. He/she controls the recording sessions, coaches and guides the performers, and supervises or takes part in the mixing process. How a producer makes money depends on the relationship he/she has with the artist and or record label. An executive producer typically invests in a project and in return receives royalties from future sales. Other producers like musician producers might receive money upfront as well as royalties from future sales of an album. The way Magnatune is set up may pose some problems for record producers. First Magnatune cuts out the middle man (record label) which puts everything in the hands of the artist. Thats not entirely good for producers. While they stand to make more if they are working from a percentage stand point now its up to the artist to keep track of the books and pay the producers whatever monies is owed to them from the sales if any. Not everyone is cut out for the business side of the music industry and most artists want nothing to do with it. Also the temptation factor is too much. If you could say that you havent sold anything meanwhile youve been selling music through downloads it adds another chance that not all parties involved will get their fair share. Without the labels a lot of the big recording budget money that the producers used to illegally pocket is also gone. Since Magnatune is catering to the independent artist there are no big budget productions. Magnatude is going to slowly k ill the record producer. Its purpose is to put the music back in the hands of the artist. So one of the side effects is the record producer must die. With all the music being made at home or in project studios very little will ever enlist the help of a producer. Its not ...

Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants
Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants Background In 1986, US lawmakers passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), this move gave official pardon to all illegal immigrants who had successfully eluded justice for many years or were illegally working in the nation.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Consequently, 2.83 million illegal immigrants were accorded amnesty and made US citizens. Records show that the pardoned persons have produced at least 142,000 dependents to date. Besides, other legislation such as the NACARA, the Haitian Act, and INA (Section 249) has additionally pardoned more than 500,000 illegal immigrants over the years. Amnesty continues to add millions of individuals into the mainstream population, indeed, a research conducted by the Immigration and Naturalization Service made astounding findings: the average person that is offered amnesty had only reached se venth grade and had an annual salary of less than $9,000. When a person is pardoned, he becomes the burden of the state and public finances are used to upkeep such individuals. Amnesty to illegal immigrants has a direct and negative impact on the economy, a study by the Center for Immigration Studies showed that the IRCA pardon costs the economy more than $7.8 billion annually. Amnesty to illegal immigrants strains the economy, the education system, social amenities and rewards those who break the law (Simcox, para. 3). Therefore, this practice must be stopped by current and future governments if any positive gains are to be made on the economy. Amnesty to Illegal Immigrants rewards those who Break the Law Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants rewards illegal conduct to those who crossed borders without the necessary papers or those who have expired visa. It sends the message that one can break the law now, and receive forgiveness later, from the government. In addition, it makes f un of the official immigration system, in which persons who obey the law wait for years to be given official immigration papers. This amnesty encourages more persons to partake in illegal activity with the hope that they too will receive pardon and become citizens. Therefore, in principle, amnesty to illegal immigrants increases the number of persons living in the country illegally (Ivereigh, para. 3). Amnesty does not Reduce Illegal Immigration A close look at immigration figures in Europe over the last three decades shows that granting amnesty to illegal immigrants does not reduce illegal immigration. The tables below show illegal immigration numbers in Italy and Spain the last three decades:Advertising Looking for research paper on government? Let's see if we can help you! In fact, such amnesty programs have encouraged further illegal immigration (Migration Watch UK, para. 4). Today, there are between 8.7 and 11 million illegal immigrants in the US, proponents of amnesty to illegal immigrants asset that this is the same number as was ten years ago, and conclude that illegal immigration is not a big public problem as posited by critics. However, they forget that without the amnesty, there would be nearly 13 million illegal immigrants living in the nation. Burden to the Economy A person who is granted official pardon is, by the same gesture, accorded full access to state resources. These consist of education, health, shelter, and welfare mat ters. Once the amnesty is granted, the individual can bring forth offspring, who are partly covered by the pardon. The costs of access to public resources and welfare benefits are funded by taxpayers, a cost that can be very significant. Amnesty threatens national security When a person applies to become a citizen of our country, the consular officials screen such a person to ensure that he does not a background or history that could be a threat to national and homeland security. Millions of illegal persons have escaped this screening, and an amnesty program makes them legal citizens without the guarantee that they are not a risk to the national security. Conclusion Amnesty to illegal immigrants has far-ranging effects on the economy of our country. Besides depending on public funds for their upkeep, illegal immigrants can be a source of insecurity in our country. Since most illegal immigrants have basic or elementary education, they do not contribute much to the economy immediately after acquiring legal status, hence they drain the nationââ¬â¢s resources. The 1986 IRCA amnesty led to an atmosphere in which our country has had to submit to other nationââ¬â¢s demands, for example, Mexicoââ¬â¢s president pushed the government to declare the status of close to five million illegal immigrants as legal residents. Other individuals have joined the queue and the political pressure to repeat the 1986 IRCA amnesty has heightened on the government.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Individuals who want to be citizens of our country must follow the legal procedures, and those who jump the procedures must be dealt with according to the legal provisions. Childhood obesity and advertising
Childhood obesity and advertising Introduction Obesity in children has become a major concern in most parts of the world. This essay explores the relationship between obesity in children and marketing of junk food. Child obesity Before discussing the relationship between child obesity and marketing of junk food through the media, it is paramount to understand the meaning of obesity and some of its effects in human beings, especially in children. In its simplicity, obesity refers to a case where one has excess body fat. Although there is no conventional definition of child obesity, many nutritionists base their definition on body mass index, commonly denoted as BMI (CDC 2012). In other cases, child obesity is described as body weight that is higher than the normal weight of a child with the same height by at least 20%. Unlike in previous years when cases of obesity were rare, it has become one of the most common health complications affecting young people in America and several First World countries. According to the American Obesity Association, approximately fifteen percent of adolescents and children in the United States are obese, with the number expected to rise (American Psychological Association 2012). Why should the world be bothered with child obesity? The truth of the matter is that obesity has a wide range of effects, which make it a global health threat. Obesity exposes victims to health, social and emotional problems, which may haunt them throughout their lives (CDC 2012). Additionally, obese children have a higher likelihood of developing obesity when they advance into adulthood. This exposes them to severe and fatal health complications like heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure. In this line of thought, there are several factors, which are believed to cause child obesity in the world today.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! On the other hand, marketing of junk food has been associated with the rising cases of child obesity in America and around the world. The following segment explains this relationship between media ads and dietary habits in children. Childhood obesity and advertising Due to the advancement in technology, 21st century children are exposed to a wide range of media and are known to spend a lot of time in front of television sets, computers and video game screens. According to the American Psychological Association, there is a direct connection between junk food adverts and increasing levels of obesity among children (American Psychological Association 2012). This is based on the fact that young children, who have become active media customers, do not have the ability to draw a line between advertising and programming (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). Additionally, children below the age of eight years do not understand why junk food companies make adverts with a persuasive intention. As a result, many psychologists argue that junk food adverts, which target children within such vulnerable age groups is exploitative. Unlike adults, children are known to have extraordinary ability to remember media content, which they feed on (Are Commercials Making You a Junk-Food Freak 2010). Notably, it has been found that children gain specific product pre ference with even a single advert, and this increases when repetitive ads are displayed by the media. Consequently, the preferences affect tastes among children and their requests to parents, which end up influencing their budget decisions (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). Unlike adults who are bombarded with an array of ads ranging from clothing to cars, children are always exposed to high concentration of junk food ads. According to research, 32% of junk adverts usually carry candy foods, 31% cereals and 9% fast food content (Caroli et al. 2004). Although it might sound unrealistic to some people, researchers have found out that up to eleven food adverts can be aired in one hour especially during weekend morning shows on television, when most children are at home. These results imply that a child in such environment is exposed to one junk food advert in every five minutes of his or her TV watching (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Childhood obesity and advertising specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More One common feature in most junk stuffs advertised is the insufficiency of body nutrients. Although initial foodstuffs had high levels of sugar, these have been replaced with snack foods, which are known to have high-fat content. While most of the researches done on the impact of junk ads on children are rarely made public, it has clearly been proven that TV adverts affect purchase preferences for most children around the world (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). Amazingly, fast food companies spent unbelievable amount of money on junk adverts, which strictly target children within the vulnerable age bracket. Many marketing executives believe that children under the age of twelve years can spend $35 billion of their cash and influence over $200 billion of household expenditure. In essence, marketers believe that the current generation is a huge consumer group, which c an draw the attention of any business-oriented person as a target market. As a result, children and young adults spend a lot of their money and influence people around them, including parents, siblings and friends to spend on junk products (Caroli et al. 2004). Although parents may have their influence, it has been found that junk ads have boosted the ability of kids to convince their parents and influence their purchase patterns. In addition, the time spent by children watching television is usually proportional to their influence and the frequency of requesting for junk foods from parents (Are Commercials Making You a Junk-Food Freak 2010). This implies that the amount of commercial ads, which a child is exposed to, is principal in influencing their feeding and preference trends. Importantly, requests made by children while moving around in a supermarket with parents or siblings have a higher likelihood of influencing purchases made than those made elsewhere (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). In some cases, children who are as young as three years old get influenced by TV adverts through their parentsââ¬â¢ decisions. Parents with such young children expose their children to high-caloric products, which are commonly advertised on television. In some experiments with different sets of foods such as junk and fruits, children preferred those foods, which they were frequently exposed to (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011).Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is to say that those who get exposed to balanced meals end up adopting proper eating habits. Moreover, marketers tend to embed junk commercials with images of items mostly preferred by children. For example, common junk ads carry famous cartoons to win the attention of children and influence their choice of food. In the context of junk foods and commercials, it is essential to analyze how media personalities, celebrities and role models influence the eating habits of many children in the world. In recent studies, it has been found that there is a steady increase in the number of junk ads, which are being done by TV and movie characters. As a result, most fast food outlets concentrate on ads that carry public personalities, which are highly recognized by young children (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). To further the attention of children and parents, McDonaldââ¬â¢s has partnered with Disney to allow the use of Disney toys in marketing its Happy Meals. Another way through wh ich adverts promote poor eating habits and childhood obesity is through media presentation of body images. In most cases, televisions, movies and magazines have preferred thinner bodies as compared to natural and healthy body images, a trend that has been known to influence children and young adults. This negative representation causes children to ignore healthy eating, especially when thin and celebrated characters feature adverts (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). This analogy concurs with research findings, linking poor eating disorders to media ads. As a matter of fact, the influence occurs since children receive contradicting dietary messages, regarding healthy eating and the definition of an ideal body image in the world today. From such ads, the impression generated is the desire for a thinner body, coupled with fatty, sugary and salty foodstuffs, which are significantly blamed for rising cases of obesity (Caroli et al. 2004). From this analysis, it is evident that marketing of junk food contributes to increasing cases of child obesity in the world today. Coupled with massive usage of digital media, children spent a lot of their time watching TV shows, which are flooded with junk food commercials (Lovelock, Patterson Wirtz 2011). It therefore presents a complex problem in finding a solution, which may involve law makers, junk food manufactures, media owners and parents. E-Commerce Systems - Essay Example E-commerce is not only limited to the exchange of goods or services, it involves a broad range of activities in different departments such as design, finance, promotion, distribution etc (OECD 2001). This has become one of the most popular and productive sources for business transactions (Kerner 2005). Companies invest great deal of their resources to have an appealing presence on the internet to attract consumers towards their products and services. There are two main classifications on the basis of which strategies are formulated to promote and market the products and services of the respective company- business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C). These classifications are made on the basis of the type of target market that is chosen by the business owner; the buying-end can either be a business itself (B2B) or an individual consumer who has certain requirements (B2C). B2B sales are targeted for a limited segment of customers whereas B2C sales are aimed for the whole set of consumer market (YourDictionary.com n.d.). The competition in the markets is more than ever and is still increasing. This has arisen as a result of the consumerââ¬â¢s access to global products and services rather than being restricted to local ones. E-business makes access to global products even more convenient. Companies are required to possess an attractive presence on the World Wide Web since otherwise they will loose the race for greater market shares and revenues. The following are some of the incentives that are gained by B2C websites: The dynamic nature of the web facilitates frequent promotions by companies regarding their products and services and these marketing strategies cost much lesser than the conventional modes of promotion and marketing. The internet user generally browses the website himself. The marketing messages can be reached to him on a personal level. There may exist enhanced responsiveness in the medium of the

Should there be any specific limitations on the powers of the president - Essay Example Americans hold consultations in high regard, and it is even required by the Constitution. Consultation, decision-making and deliberation are fundamental concepts in the Constitution, with frequent mentions of participation and collective approaches to situations. Even the Constitution itself is the result of consultation among past leaders (Meter 102). Successive presidents have disregarded the need for greater consultation and acted without consulting Congress or the Senate. Limiting the presidentââ¬â¢s power should be a priority for the American public and Congress to prevent impunity from creeping into the presidency. More often than not, presidents get away with individual decisions that go against the consultative spirit of the Constitution (Meter 96). Issues in Womens Health - Assignment Example The most frequent of all the indications of heart attack in women is some pain or discomfort in the chest. Nevertheless, there are added symptoms that are more conspicuous than the chest pains. These other symptoms are more severe than the pressure or pain in the chest that women often cite. Studies have revealed that these chest pressures might be due to the presence of blockages in arteries and veins that supply blood to the heart in womanââ¬â¢s heart (Libov 1991). The other symptoms are right arm pain, unusual fatigue, shortness of breath as well as neck and upper back discomfort. The most challenging issue with this symptom in women is that they may occur when least expected like while sleeping or resting. These symptoms, on the other hand, might be triggered by mental stress. Since sometimes they occur randomly, women downplay them until there problem gets severe.à The most familiar risk reasons for women include diabetes and smoking, both which increase the chances of hear t disease significantly in women. Low levels of estrogen in the body after the onset of menopause have also been identified to pose a significant risk for the development of micro vascular disease in smaller blood vessels. Pregnancy is also among the risk factors as difficulties such as diabetes or high blood pressure might trigger the development of heart diseases in the mother and her children. Mental stress despite affecting both men and women, it has been found to affect the hearts of women more significantly than men.

Outline and discuss the evolution of CSR, including its history, role in the financial crisis and prospects for the future. Supp - Essay Example In this documentary film, Moore conducts an investigative research on the impact that the closure of General Motorsââ¬â¢ auto plants in Flint, Michigan, United States, had on the local communities. From the documentary film, it is clearly noted how by 1988 a leading company in the caliber of General Motors failed to denote its significant contribution to the local communities where it operated and it even failed to establish a clear structure of how the organization relates with the local communities. At the time of the Closure, Moore, reported that General Motors was making substantial amounts of profits but its decision to relocate its plants to Mexico was mainly motivated by the fact the company was seeking to lower its operating expenses by using cheap labor that was available in Mexico. Whilst making this decision, Mr. Roger Smith, the chairperson of the corporation at that time, failed to be socially responsible because of the fact that his decision led to 30,000 jobs losses , and a severe economic recession within the Flint area. Moreover, there was increase in cases of crime, evictions across the area because of failure to pay rent, and massive exodus of people from the area. Presently, General Motors Corporation is one of the leading companies in the world, which has a well-elaborate corporate social responsible unit that is managed through the GM foundation, and this is a clear indication that corporate social responsibility has evolved overtime and it has grown to become an integral part of the business model of most business organizations. This present essay is based on company law and it seeks to outline and discuss the evolution of corporate social responsibility, including its history, role in the financial crisis, and prospects for the future. The history of corporate social responsibility The writings by McWilliams et al. (2006), aimed at demonstrating the evolution, which human resource management and corporate social responsibility have und ergone. This writings succeeded in doing this by first establishing a valid point that during the early stages of industrial revolution, which was taking place across various countries that are now developed, all of the companies treated their employees as machinery that were designed for performing various tasks and being rewarded. This means that companies did not put into consideration the welfare of their employees. However, following the establishment of the
Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment Essay Example for Free
Psychoanalytic Personality Assessment Essay Psychoanalytic theory was developed by Sigmend Freud. It is a system in which unconscious motivations are considered to shape normal and abnormal personality development and behavior. Psychoanalysis is commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders. Freudââ¬â¢s Psychosexual Theory of Development explains that if there was a conflict in a stage and not resolved that person would be fixated. Carl Jungââ¬â¢s Analytic Psychology is according to the mind or psyche. Alfred Alderââ¬â¢s Individual Psychology is the importance of each personââ¬â¢s perceived niche in society. Freudââ¬â¢s work is now the most heavily cited in all of psychology. Most of Freudââ¬â¢s patients did not need treatment so he resorted to using hypnosis. He used the technique of free association in order to understand the causes of mental and physical problems in his patients. Dreams to him were saw as pieces and hints of unconscious. The problems of inner conflict and tension are found in dreams. There are three structured parts in the mind according to Freud. The three parts are id, ego, and superego. Freudââ¬â¢s and Jung are compared by using unconscious sexuality in their theories. The id, das es in German means the it; it operates according to the demands of the pleasure principle to reduce inner tension. Ego is the Latin word for I. Personality that deals with the real world according to the reality principle to solve real problems. Superego rules over the ego and parts are unconscious, though it constrains our individual actions. Freud looked for meaning in minor connections thoughts and behaviors. Now 100 of years later there are no three levels id, ego, and superego. Freud was correct in concluding that certain parts of the mind are not subject to conscious awareness. His theories opened new approaches to human nature and psychotherapy. Carl Jung theory is divided into three parts just as Freudââ¬â¢s theory is. The three are unconscious, personal unconscious, and collective unconscious. Freud and Carl embody the sense of self for unconscious. Personal unconscious are thoughts and urges that are unimportant at the present. This contains past (retrospective) and future (prospective) material to be compensated to have a balance. Collective unconscious is comprises a deeper level of unconsciousness and is made up of powerful emotional symbols called archetypes. Archetypes are derived from the emotional reactions of our ancestors. Carl Jung was interested in the deepest universal aspects of personality and expanded ideas of the unconscious to include emotionally charged images and expanded ideas of all generations. He also gives the concepts of complexes meaning emotionally charged thoughts and feeling on a particular them. Another thing is he describes personality as being comprised of competing forces pulling against one another to reach equilibrium. Alfred Adler focused on the social world and its identity. Adler and Freudââ¬â¢s differences were in the origin of motivation. Freud theory was based on prime motivations that were built on pleasure and sexuality. Adlerââ¬â¢s theory is based on motivations that are more complex. Adler was much more concerned with social conditions and saw the need to take preventive measures to avoid disturbances in personality. He believed personality problems can be avoided by using detailed knowledge about individuals to construct healthier social environment. Personality typology based loosely on Greek notions of the bodily humors. He believed in positive goal oriented and nature of human kind. There are two characteristics that I agree with which are: Jungââ¬â¢s personal unconscious and Alderââ¬â¢s superiority complex. There are two characteristics that I disagree with which are: Freudââ¬â¢s latency stage and Alderââ¬â¢s collective unconscious. Psychosexual Development has five stages: oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, Oedipus complex, Electra complex, latency stage, and genital stage. Oral stage is where we satisfy our hunger and thirst. Anal stage is where we feel relief when defecating. Phallic stage is where adolescents focus on genitals. Oedipus stage is where a young boy wants to kill his father to marry his beloved mother. This is the opposite for girls in the Electra complex. Latency stage is where adolescents focus more on academics and friendships. Genital stage is where marks the beginning of an adult life of normal sexual relations, marriage, and child-rearing. Challenges from the outer environment and from our inner urges threaten us with anxiety; there are three defense mechanisms that I can relate to very well. The three are reaction formation, displacement, and rationalization. The processes that the ego uses to distort reality to protect itself are called defense mechanisms. Reaction formation is the process of pushing away threatening impulses by overemphasizing the opposite in oneââ¬â¢s thoughts and actions, e.g. Josephine was a classmate of mine in 2008. A lot of my peers in that year were exposing themselves to be either gay or lesbian. Josephineââ¬â¢s religious and outspoken background made her very judgmental towards her peers. Ultimately, the summer of 2009 being in the spotlight of high school she had a girlfriend. Displacement is the shifting of the target of oneââ¬â¢s unconscious fears and desires, e.g. Jason and I get into arguments all the time just as any normal couple. The dishes were not washes like I had asked. For some reason my frustration was at an all-time high. The dog tipped over the trash can in the kitchen and in the bathroom. Not to mention the dog feces in the living. I had enough so I kicked my dog, Charles. Rationalization is a mechanism involving post-hoc logical explanations for behaviors that were actually driven by internal unconscious motives, e.g. I want to move back home so that it will be easier for the baby and I just know it would be so much easier and a better opportunity for me to concentrate on school, but the underlying is that I just want to leave my current home. In conclusion, psychoanalytic theory was developed by Freud. This is a system in which unconscious motivations are considered to shape normal and abnormal personality development and behavior. Both Freud and Jung believed ego played a huge part in personality and the unconscious sexuality. Adler and Freudââ¬â¢s theory differed by the origin of motivation. Freud believes in prime motivations were pleasure and sexuality. Adler believes in human motivations that are more complex. Like Jun Adler believed in the importance of the teleological aspects, or goal-directedness of human nature. Difference in Freudââ¬â¢s and Adlerââ¬â¢s philosophies was that Adler was much more concerned with social conditions. He saw the need to take preventive measures to avoid disturbances in personality. In all of these theories helped open new approac hes to human nature and psychotherapy. References Friedman, H. S., Schustack, M. W. (2011). Personality. Volkswagen Operations Strategy
Volkswagen Operations Strategy Product Design In 1945, a rare and curious Volkswagen car was shipped from its bomb-damaged German factory to England. Here, a commission of leading British motor manufacturers inspected the small car. It would be quite unattractive to the average motorcar buyer, the commission reported. It is too ugly and noisy, while to build the car commercially would be a completely uneconomic enterprise. The commission was mistake, however, and the Volkswagen Beetle, with its friendly styling by the Austrian designer Erwin Komenda, and innovative engineering by Ferdinand Porsche, became the best-selling car of all time. Production of the Beetle outstripped that of Henry Fords Model-T when the 15,007,034th car rolled off the line at Wolfsburg in 1972. As its name made clear, the Volkswagen was truly a Peoples Car. Ultimately, the sheer quality, along with the affordability, reliability, economy and distinct look and feel of the Beetle, ensured its success. College Admissions Essay: Help the Little Children :: College Admissions Essays
Help the Little Children à "I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside." These are the words of the well-known singer, Whitney Houston. They are words that I truly intend to live by. My greatest reason for wanting to further my education is to be able to teach and help the children. à See, I come from a small community in Mississippi called Fitler. Many people have not even heard of it. In this community there is nothing positive to motivate or encourage the children to get involved in meaningful goals. One would think that there wouldn't be any problems in a community of roughly 200 people, which is only growing because of teenage pregnancies. I heard a woman from the state's capital make the statement that "the people in this area are either overweight, Christians, or pregnant because all they have to do is eat, go to church, and have sex." As harsh as that sounds, I agree. They are in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing. These children have to ride the bus for one and one-half-hours just to get to school. à I believe that if there were more activities, organizations, encouragement, and motivation, and if they had someone to teach them the importance of an education and the values of life, many of their problems would cease. Therefore, with my education, I will enrich the lives of these children. First, I will start a 4-H Club. I will also organize a Big Brother and Big Sister Youth Group, build playgrounds, and start little league athletic departments. I will build a Youth Center with a library, video arcade, and skating rink. The center will also offer classes in Biblical education, computer education, and tutoring for all grade levels. I will hire advisors to come in biweekly for ACT Preparation courses and courses on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. There will be two guidance counselors available at all times and I will provide a way for the older children to earn money. I even have plans for building a school in closer proximity to the students. à I'm constantly realizing that everyone is not as blessed as I am. College Admissions Essay: Help the Little Children :: College Admissions Essays Help the Little Children à "I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way. Narrative- Amazon Woman Essay examples -- Personal Narrative Writing
Narrative- Amazon Woman I need to recover a rhythm in my heart that moves my body first and my mind second, that allows my soul to catch up with me. I need to take a sacred pause, as if I were a sun-warmed rock in the center of a rushing river. I am crouching still near a tree on a loamy ridge, my two hands spread around the trunk. I am feeling grateful for this tree that I remember because of its mossy smell and thick crevassed bark. It tells me that the beaver pond is near where one white pine shoots 100 feet up out of the tannic water, which means I am close to camp and food and sleep. I get to the pondââ¬â¢s edge, across from the point where my tent sits. There are no trails and the boreal forest is thick with scrub pine and dead-fall. Early afternoon sun brings out the wave of deer flies; I shake my head so that my two braids might hit the little buggers in mid-air. Undeterred, one begins to chew on my shoulder blade and prickers dig into my shins. I can see my tent across the pond, 100 yards as the crow flies, probably a mile walk around the edge. I decide to take off my clothes, leave them on this rock by the shore, swim across and come back for my things later in my canoe. Even though the whine of the deer fliesââ¬â¢ wings beating around my head intensifies, I just stare at the water. It is only two feet deep here at the edge, but it is so dark that I cannot see the bottom. Darker shapes appear as I stare, including a large fallen pine tree which leads from the shore and disappears into the darkness. A fear takes hold of me, as it does every time I conte mplate diving into this dark water. I shake my head to loosen its grip, feel a deer fly land on the small of my back and I dive. I swim as hard as I can, my heart bang... ...Today I am smiling wide and proud of this body that carried boat and gear down to the waterââ¬â¢s edge; that paddled against the wind across the bay to the foot of the wetland stream. The body that hoisted the laden canoe over five beaver damns, that carried boat and canoe up the trail for a mile to the secret pond; that sleeps comfortably in a tent alone out here listening to the hoot owl, and the loons and the cacophony of bullfrog music; the body that jerks upright at midnight with the sound of a buckââ¬â¢s snort and heavy stomp of his hoof; the body that gets up early and bushwhacks to the top of the mountain. I lie down on the warm rock at the edge of the pond and I close my eyes. My breath feels easy and light, my belly is soft and where a hard gnarled knot used to be under my sternum, a warmth spreads beyond my skin, around the blue sky and sun and back in again.

Learning Module 3 Connor MacLeod 100254620 The first video, The Solar Nebular Theory, describes the planetary formation through a collapsing cloud of dust and gas that spins in the same direction at a fast pace. Through angular momentum, as it collapses even more, it speeds up and flattens into a disk. As it flattens, the materials start to come together and planets start to form as well as a young star is created in the middle. What I liked about the video is how they used good analogies such as the pizza and the figure skater to get the idea of angular momentum across. What I didnââ¬â¢t like about the video is how they didnââ¬â¢t go more in depth about the other bodies that are created around the star. To make it better I wouldââ¬â¢ve used our solar system as an example in order to relate to it better The 2nd video is the Planetisimal video. It goes on to describe how particles grow by condensation, the process of adding matter to an atom or molecule. Once they get to a big enough size, the particles start to stick to others through a process called accretion. Planetisimals continue to grow by colliding and sticking to others until it gets large enough to turn into a protoplanet. The stage where iron falls to the core and heat is generated while lighter materials stay on the outside to create the earths crust. What I did not like about the video is how they do not specify how long it takes for it to turn into a protoplanet from a planetisimal. The woman talks about millions of years to get to the diameter of the particle to centimeters until they start to collide, but lacks the information of how long the collisions take to get bigger. They could improve the video by adding these details into it.What I liked about the video is how it goes in depth about protoplanets and the gravitational collapse as the textbook had me somewhat confused. The 3rd video is the extra solar planets. It is about how to detect planets outside of our solar system that gravita te around other stars. They donââ¬â¢t try and find planets directly, they observe the stars in which they believe planets gravitate around and watch how the star reacts. The way they can measure this is through the Doppler affect. As the planet gravitates around it, it pulls the star in different directions. So when a star comes towards you, its light gets compressed, and when it is moving away, the light waves get stretched. What I liked about the video is the way they illustrated how the Doppler affect worked with visuals as oppose to the dog theory in the textbook. That being said, what I didnââ¬â¢t like about the video was how they focused solely on detecting planets through the Doppler affect, I would improve upon this video by not leaving out the other approach of detecting the difference in light when a planet moves in front of it.The 4th video is about meteorites. It discuses how meteoroidââ¬â¢s cause meteors, that is until it reaches the ground and are renamed to me teorites. It then describes how each meteorite is classified by its composition. Each different composition inside a meteorite allows geologists to identify their space origins. What I liked about the video is how they discussed the different kinds of meteorites and the significance of different compositions of the meteorites. What I didnââ¬â¢t like is how they did not touch upon meteor showers and different meteor showers. To improve this video I wouldââ¬â¢ve included some facts of the Perseid meteor shower. The 5th video is about asteroids. It discusses how Italian astronomer Piazzi discovered the first asteroid. Now there are over 100,000 asteroids that lay in the asteroid belt near mars and Jupiter. They also describe the reason the asteroids are in the belt could be due to a planet that never formed. The pull of Jupiterââ¬â¢s gravity kept the particles accelerating so fast, they could never accrete. What I liked about the video is how it spent the most time discussing wh y the asteroid belt exists as that caught my attention the most in the textbook, where its only mentioned briefly. What I didnââ¬â¢t like about the video is it didnââ¬â¢t discuss the shapes and size of the asteroids themselves. To improve this video I wouldââ¬â¢ve added some interesting facts from the textbook such as some are asteroids are 200km in diameter. The 6th video is about comets. It talked about how civilization was influenced from comets and the association of comets to earth through eligious or mythological oriented societies and how they were viewed as a bad omen. What I did not like about this video is how it did not describe at all what a comet is, or what it is made up of. They could make this video better by discussing the basics of a comet, not just the historic significance it played on our societies. That being said, what I did like about this video is the telling of how it played a role in our societies that if something bad happened, and a comet was in the sky, it started to be associated with each other.

Michelangelo buonarroti
Michelangelo Buonarroti lived in the Renaissance period an epoch which spanned between the 15th and sixteenth century and saw the metempsychosis or resurgence of the Greek and Roman style. This manner had been generated back in the fourteenth century by the Italian poet Petrarch who had divided history into three ages: from the ââ¬Å" the aureate age of classical antiquity, the dark age after the Roman imperium collapsed and his ain modern age when the values of antiquity were reborn â⬠. Artists began to near pictures and sculptures with a more scientific oculus, turning their dorsums towards the traditional, mediaeval manner of picturing infinites in a religious manner. The resurgence sees its beginning in Italy, in peculiar in Florence where rich bankers and merchandisers who took pride in their part to society, began to committee plants of art from pictures, frescos and sculptures for churches, castles and even for their ain homes. The Renaissance besides saw the birth of new pictures techniques, the evolvement of oil pigment meant creative persons were no longer committed to utilizing egg poster paint and therefore free to research the layering of colorss. The find of the Torahs of position, based on mathematical computations, alternatively brought deepness and proportion to a space.Linear one point position in fact became an built-in portion of all pictures throughout the fifteenth century.Artists like Raphael relied entirely on the simple on-point position tool to expose his forms in infinite and give them a three dimensional experience a manner clearly seeable in his ââ¬ËSchool of Athens ââ¬Ë . During the full fifteenth century Florence was the Centre of humanistic disciplines in Italy which saw many creative persons like Massaccio for picture, Donatello in sculpture and Brunelleschi for architecture taking the alteration in style.Rome alternatively at this clip was confronting political jobs ; in fact the pontificate had been transferred to France from 1309 boulder clay 1377 and merely was it subsequently, in the sixteenth century, to reflect gloriously thanks to the attempts of Pope Julius II, known as the warrior male monarch but besides one of the most celebrated frequenters of the humanistic disciplines. Together with his designer Bramante and creative persons like Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo Da Vinci, he contributed to the rise of the High Renaissance Style which was to convey Rome as the taking Centre of the humanistic disciplines projecting a shadow over its rival Florence. He in fact laid the foundation rock for St. Peter ââ¬Ës Basilica, had painted the Ra phael Rooms, and had the Sistine chapel ceilings painted by Michelangelo. Towards the in-between sixteenth century, the High Renaissance period saw creative persons like Michelangelo desiring to interrupt free from the cardinal position manner, animating three dimensional infinites simply with shading and foreshortening. Rich and streamlined curtain would embroider the scene and architectural position, if any, would be represented with little hints of perspective therefore arousing a two point position without though the usage of a additive, geometric grid. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475 at Caprese in Italy.Second of four kids was descendant from the Counts of Canossa, a baronial and celebrated household of Reggio. His male parent, Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti Simoni was the magistrate of Caprese and Chiusi, whilst his female parent Francesca di Neri di ser Miniato del Sera is non mentioned by Condivi or Vassari, Michelangelo ââ¬Ës biographers, if non to go through up that she had died whilst Michelangelo was a immature kid. In fact Michelangelo was given to a wet nurse who non merely was the girl of a rock Carver but besides had married one. This must hold greatly influenced Michelangelo to the huge creative activities he was to gestate subsequently when merely merely a adolescent. In fact harmonizing to Vasari, Michelangelo one time quoted ââ¬Å" I sucked in chisels and cocks with my nurse ââ¬Ës milk â⬠. His male parent tried to take Michelangelo towards the universe of letters, directing him to the celebrated school of Francesco da Urbino in Florence, but Michelangelo ââ¬Ës artistic nature was to pull him towards painting. His friend, Franceso Granacci seeing his artistic gift, enticed him to abandon his surveies by exciting him with other artistic sights. He showed him the plants of Domenico Ghirlandaio, considered one of the leasing Masterss at the clip, whose workshops he attended. This led Michelangelo to abandon his class making mayhem in his household who were really distressed at his pick. In 1488 Michelangelo began his three twelvemonth apprenticeship in Domenico Ghirlandaio ââ¬Ës workshop. Here he learnt to pull, pigment and was introduced to the art of frescoing. For a long period he copied the plants of past celebrated creative persons. He shortly began to outshine his fellow bookmans and even his maestro who became more and more covetous of his accomplishments. After a twelvemonth, likely due to their frequent struggles and because he wished to go a sculpture, that Michelangelo left the apprenticeship and began to work for Lorenzo De Medici, frequenter of the humanistic disciplines and swayer of Florence at the clip. Here he began to develop his accomplishments as a sculpture. Unlike Ghiberti and Donatello, who sculptured their figures on really typical analogue planes, Michelangelo was able to put his figures so that they merged effortlessly into eternity making a sense of existent infinite. He was besides able to make motion, such as with ââ¬Å" the Battle of Centaurs, where limbs ââ¬Å" bit by bit extended themselves and no longer belonged to different planes. ââ¬Å" His mastermind was being able to visualize within a piece of marble a finished three dimensional object, without the usage of drawings. With the ââ¬Å" Bacchus â⬠the musculuss lost the rigidness of ancient theoretical accounts, and became softer and more roundedâ⬠¦ ..the strength that can be detected in the muscular structure, which is suppressed in some points and relaxed in others, â⬠He acquired an unbelievable cognition of human anatomy thanks to his visits to the Hospital of Santo Spirito where he would dissect and analyze corpses.Unlike his predecessors who created stiff and unreal word pictures of the human organic structure, he was able to reproduce accurately and harmoniously the articulation of the limbs and articulations. Both pieces reflect his mastermind in portraying the human organic structure in its fullest, stressing musculus tone, ligaments and articulations. We besides can look up to his accomplishment in making curtain that was so full of motion, like in the Pieta ââ¬Ë . It was n't though until 1508 that he was to confront his greatest challenge, one that he was n't passionate about and was practically forced to set about by the Papacy of the clip, to paint the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. The Sistine Chapel is a rectangular shaped edifice, mensurating 41 m by 13,5 m built by Pope Sixtus VI between 1475 and 1483 and is said to reflect the dimensions of the temple of Salomon. The sides were painted in 1481 by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Rosselli and subsequently by Signorelli. The ceiling alternatively is thought to hold been painted originally by the creative person Pier Matteo D'Amelia who depicted the ceiling with a starry sky, a method used by creative persons in the thirteenth and 14th century for Gothic ceilings. In 1508 Pope Julius II summoned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the chapel. He reluctantly began to work on the ceiling with the aid of a few of his sure Florentine friends who really able in the art of frescoing. It must be remembered that Michelangelo for the last 20 old ages had been restricted to sculpturing and his lone preparation in frescoing went back to his childhood old ages in the Ghirlandaio workshop. Not merely did Michelangelo hold to larn the fresco technique but besides some really impressive position technique sing his figures had to be painted on a barrel vaulted ceiling at 60 pess from the ground. The Fresco technique consists of the creative person painting straight on freshly laid plaster, ââ¬Å" intonaco â⬠, so that one time the plaster is dry, the pigment becomes an built-in portion of the wall. The creative person transportations his paper drawings to the walls and pricks the surface along the lineations of the images. Such holes are so dusted with a b ag of carbon black ( spolvero ) to reproduce points on the walls ââ¬Ë surface. The creative person so joins the lines to reproduce the drawing accurately. Pope Julius expected him to picture the 12 apostles but alternatively Michelangelo was able to convert him that such an huge ceiling deserved an impressive work of art, worthy of its grandeur. Here he portrayed the narrative of human sort before the reaching of Jesus Christ. He began painting from the entryway of the chapel towards the communion table completing with the below lunettes picturing inactive figures in speculation. The cardinal portion of the domed ceiling characteristics nine squares in assorted sizes, exemplifying the journey of human sort from the creative activity of the universe to the beginning of wickedness and its effects. He focused his work wholly on the human figure and hence landscapes and architecture were practically omitted. It can be noticed how he left plentifulness of infinite around his figures, making a tract for the human oculus to inquire mediate and around his figures, making necessarily motion in the spectator. He conceived false architectonic squa res called ââ¬Å" quadri riportati â⬠which resemble framed easel images, inhabited by existent figures traveling about their different activities. Here Michelangelo reminds us of his sculpturing mastermind, where the figures he depicts move towards the spectator as if to jump out of the two-dimensionality of the painted surface. Michelangelo used the ââ¬Å" cangiante â⬠technique to make this, where he applied profoundly contrasting colorss next to each other and applied shots of white pigment, therefore pulling the visible radiation and reflecting it so as to make extraordinary pragmatism and sense of physical presence within space. These strongly contrasting colorss besides increase the volumes and underpin the strength and motion of the figures. The foreground figures have typical and clear lineations whereas the background figures are less clear or ââ¬Å" sfumato, a technique where the image lineations are blurred into the background â⬠as if merely the foregrou nd images were in focus. One notices that this is non evident in all the sketchs, as some show no position at all, like the creative activity of Adam, or that of the words. In fact Michelangelo turns his dorsum to the stiff Torahs of position and by the usage of coloring material and the manner he denotes human emotions though the motion of the limbs and facial look he manages to convey these figures to life and make a existent sense of infinite and activity. This is clearly seeable in the inundation, where the discharge sits in the background and is less emphatic, unlike the foreground figures that are traveling, easy and distressingly towards the shore to happen deliverance. He besides brings motion merely by picturing garments in a flowing and traveling province, sometimes as if the air current was blowing beneath them, as in ââ¬Å" the creative activity of Adam â⬠where the green scarf is clearly being moved by the air current. Here the usage of white is apparent, which when used in the green and ruddy scarf add excess motion to the scene. Michelangelo created motion besides through the placement of the appendages of his figures, puting pess and custodies in opposite waies. Movement is once more clearly represented in Michelangelo ââ¬Ës initial drawings of the the Lybian Sibyl where her organic structure is twisted or in ââ¬Å" contrapposto â⬠in the act of keeping a book. Here the muscular structure is rather overdone for a adult female, but is accountable to the fact that his original drawings were made utilizing a male theoretical account. This strong masculine figure AIDSs in making an semblance of motion as these musculuss are depic ted under tenseness, as if on the brink of set abouting a task. The usage of ââ¬Å" chiaroscuro â⬠, shadows is besides an built-in portion of his work adding deepness and stressing the three dimensional infinite. Michelangelo is depicted as the greatest painter of the Renaissance period but you could reason that his illustriousness was in how he applied the techniques of others. You could besides oppugn if he was the conceiver of any of the techniques he adopted as it would look that the merely radical interruption attributed to him, was the complete rejection of the Torahs of position which were normally used by others at the clip. He was n't the first to accomplish motion in art. Before him creative persons like Da Vinci and Botticelli had achieved this. In Leonardo ââ¬Ës ââ¬Å" Last supper â⬠dated 1447 one can detect in the word picture of the apostles how motion is suggested thanks to the carefully placed custodies indicating in assorted waies. With Botticelli ââ¬Ës ââ¬Å" Primavera â⬠dated 1482 the fluxing garments and the placement of the really expressive custodies clearly denote minute throughout the scene. Although his work was clearly that of a mastermind, his glare for me lies in the manner he portrayed the figures in the Sistine chapel. He managed to carve them out of the level surface, as if making a sculpture in every piece he painted. His manner though was non wholly alone as it is was really much reminiscent of other great Masterss of the clip, like Ghirlandaio and Luca Signorelli but still brilliant as unlike these Masterss he brought great look to the human figures together with great and baronial musculus tone. The Guildhall Carpet shall be given three dimensionality thorough the usage of techniques which Michelangelo himself adopted on the Sistine Chapel when he created sculptures in his picture. Michelangelo ââ¬Ës usage of coloring material, which was inspired by Leonardo ââ¬Ës ââ¬Å" chiaroscuro â⬠, will animate me besides to add shadows to my objects, making deepness and strength. Through Giotto ââ¬Ës usage of ââ¬Å" cangianti â⬠adopted greatly in the ceiling by Michelangelo, I will add motion and flow to the forms. The purpose is to make a three dimensional piece through usage of coloring material and shadows.
